Mathematical Problem Solving

At Tamim’s ThinkLab, I focus on teaching mathematical problem solving rather than just teaching mathematics. This means helping students learn how to use math to solve complex and unfamiliar problems. Here’s how it’s different:

The difference lies in the approach. For example, learning to count, add, multiply and divide, as well as using fractions, positive and negative numbers, and many other basic topics are not the focus here. My goal is to teach students how to use what they already know, along with their innate logical reasoning skills, to solve unfamiliar problems. This approach is about developing independent problem solvers who can explain their reasoning and find joy in the ‘Ah ha!’ moments of discovery. The joy and satisfaction of solving a difficult problem and the sense of accomplishment it brings are what make this learning process so valuable and enjoyable.
